New foundations in disturbed, irrigated soil are a common place to find subterranean termites in Shelby County, and the remaining farmland and creek bottoms toward Buxahatchee and Waxahatchee send mice, crickets, and spiders toward the nearest garage every fall. Older homes near downtown and the historic district have the opposite problem — crawlspaces and pier foundations that termites have had decades to find.
