What Happens on Your First Pest Control Visit (An Alabama Walkthrough)
People picture a technician spraying baseboards for twenty minutes. The first visit is mostly outside, mostly looking, and the most valuable part is the walk around the house before anything gets applied. Here is what actually happens, how long it takes, and what you should have ready.
The most common surprise on a first visit is how much of it is looking rather than spraying. A technician who walks straight to the baseboards with a sprayer is treating the symptom you called about. A good first visit finds the reasons the pests are there — the entry points, the moisture, the harborage — and treats those, so the second visit is about maintenance rather than the same problem again.
Before the visit
You do not have to clean the house. It helps to have the areas where you have seen pests accessible — under the kitchen sink, the pantry floor, the garage corners — and to have pets secured. If you know where you have seen activity, tell the technician; a photo of the insect saves time. Have the gate unlocked if the backyard is fenced. If nobody is home, exterior service can still happen; interior work waits for a time you are there.
The walk around the outside
This is where the value is. The technician walks the full perimeter looking at the foundation line, the weep holes, where the AC line and hose bib and cable enter the wall, every door threshold and garage seal, crawlspace vents, mulch depth against the slab, gutters and downspouts, and anything touching the siding. In Alabama that walk also catches things you did not call about: a mud tube on a pier, a wasp nest starting in a soffit, a gap a mouse will use in October. You should get a plain description of what was found and what it means.
What gets treated, and where
The exterior treatment goes on the surfaces insects actually cross: the foundation band, around doors and windows, the garage threshold, eaves and soffits, and the shaded cover where they rest. Granular material goes in beds and along the drip line where appropriate. Wasp nests within reach get taken down. For ants, non-repellent material and bait go at the nest sites and trails rather than a broadcast spray. Everything used is EPA-registered and applied per label directions, and the technician will tell you the re-entry timing for treated areas.
Inside
Interior treatment on a first visit is targeted: bait in the cracks where roaches live, treatment at the plumbing penetrations under sinks, the garage, and the attic or crawlspace access if the inspection found reason. It is not a baseboard spray of every room — that is the old way, and it is not how pests are reached. If the problem is German cockroaches or fleas, the technician will explain that a follow-up visit is part of the plan, because the egg stage does not respond to the first treatment.
How long, and what happens next
A first visit on a typical home runs forty-five minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the lot and what was found. Expect to see more activity for a few days as material reaches the nests — that is the treatment working, and it is the reason we ask you not to spray on top of it. If something shows up between scheduled visits, you call and we come back at no charge; that is part of the plan, not an add-on. The next routine visit is in two months, and the technician on your route tends to stay the same, which is how they end up knowing about the wasp nest over your back door before you do.
What it costs
